Why Your AC Freezes Up in the Middle of a Little Rock Summer

It sounds impossible: a block of ice on your air conditioner's lines during the hottest week of the year. But frozen evaporator coils are one of the most common mid-summer calls we get across Pulaski County — and running the system while it's frozen is one of the fastest ways to kill a compressor.

Two Causes, One Result

Airflow starvation. Your coil needs warm indoor air flowing across it constantly. A filthy filter, a blower that's failing, blocked return vents or a matted coil can starve that airflow — and the coil temperature drops below freezing. Condensation that should drip away freezes in place instead, and the ice builds until airflow stops entirely.

Low refrigerant. When charge drops (always because of a leak — refrigerant isn't "used up"), pressure falls and the coil runs far colder than designed. The result is the same ice block, plus a system that cools worse and worse while your Entergy bill climbs.

What To Do Right Now

• Turn the AC OFF at the thermostat — running frozen damages the compressor
• Switch the fan to ON to speed the thaw (expect several hours)
• Put towels down — a thawed coil dumps a lot of water
• Check the filter; if it's gray and matted, replace it
• If it freezes again after the thaw, stop — that's refrigerant or a deeper airflow problem
